Parietal subdural empyema as complication of acute odontogenic sinusitis: a case report

2014

Introduction: To date intracranial complication caused by tooth extractions are extremely rare. In particular parietal subdural empyema of odontogenic origin has not been described. A literature review is presented here to emphasize the extreme rarity of this clinical entity. Case presentation: An 18-year-old Caucasian man with a history of dental extraction developed dysarthria, lethargy, purulent rhinorrhea, and fever. A computed tomography scan demonstrated extensive sinusitis involving maxillary sinus, anterior ethmoid and frontal sinus on the left side and a subdural fluid collection in the temporal-parietal site on the same side. He underwent vancomycin, metronidazole and meropenem th…

Dynamische Bildgebung der Nasenhaupthöhle und der Nasennebenhöhlen im MR mittels polarisiertem 3Helium

2001

sinuses with polarized 3 helium MRI. Purpose: Reduced or blocked ventilation of the paranasal sinuses is probably the most important factor in the development of sinusitis. Recently, the use of optically polarized noble gas isotopes has attracted increasing interest for use in a variety of promising MR applications. The aim of this study was to test the feasibility of imaging and visualization ventilation of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinus in MR by inhalation of hyperpolarized 3 helium. The goal was to evaluate ventilation defects of the paranasal sinuses. Volunteers and Methods: Three volunteers were enrolled in the study. 3 Helium was polarized to 40-50% by direct optical pumping. 30…

Identification of unknown dead bodies by X-ray image comparison of the skull using the X-ray simulation program FoXSIS.

2001

The aim of the study was to improve the objectivity of X-ray image comparison for the identification of unknown dead individuals. CT-data were collected for 30 macerated skulls. An already presented computer program which uses CT data to establish virtual X-ray images was used to obtain X-rays with different beam angulations simulating rotation, dorsal flexion, and ventral flexion. Specific parameters were measured on the simulated images. The frontal sinus reveals the highest variability not only between the individual skulls but also within an individual skull in different positions. The most consistent parameters with respect to different positions were the skull breadth, the biorbital b…

B‐Mode ultrasonography of the paranasal sinuses compared with CT findings

1992

Ultrasound as a diagnostic aid in the evaluation of the sinuses has been a controversial issue. Sensitivities have been reported from 29% to 100% and specificities from 55% to 99%. These wide variations in results from previous studies may have resulted from technical differences. However, the "gold standard" most often used for comparison has been a Water's view radiograph, which has been shown to correlate poorly with intraoperative and CT scan findings. To our knowledge, no one in the English language literature has evaluated sonography of the sinuses with computed tomography as the gold standard. In addition, evaluation of the ethmoid sinus has been neglected by previous studies that ha…

Sejas un žokļu traumas Paula Stradiņa Klīniskajā Universitātes slimnīcā

2020

Treatment of malar and midfacial fractures with osteoconductive forged unsintered hydroxyapatite and poly-L-lactide composite internal fixation devic…

2013

Purpose To evaluate the internal fixation of malar and midfacial fractures, long-term results, and biocompatibility of osteoconductive internal fixation devices composed of a forged composite of unsintered hydroxyapatite and poly-L-lactide (F-u-HA/PLLA). Materials and Methods From January 2006 to June 2010, 29 patients (24 males and 5 females; age 33 ± 15 years) were included in the present prospective study. The fracture type was malar in 24 patients, midfacial in 5, isolated orbital floor blowout in 2, and frontal sinus, cranial base in 2 patients. The fractures were fixed with internal fixation devices; these were plates and screws composed of F-u-HA/PLLA. The 24 patients with malar frac…

Spontaneous cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea: A clinical and anatomical study

2010

Objectives/Hypothesis: Spontaneous nasal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) fistula represents a rare clinical entity. The possible etiology and the localization of the rhinorrhea remain an ongoing clinical challenge. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the localization of spontaneous CSF fistula and to correlate it with anatomical studies. Study Design: Retrospective clinical study, prospective anatomical study. Methods: Twenty-nine patients with spontaneous CSF rhinorrhea were retrospectively studied, 10 males and 19 females. Ages ranged from 10 to 92 years (mean, 50 years). In addition, 48 human skulls from newborns to adults were examined for the postnatal development of the anterior and m…
